Maddumabandara was a great child
hero in Sri Lanka. He was the second son of Ehelapola Adikaram. His mother was
Ehalepola Kumarihami. He had one brother and one sister. Ehelapola Adikaram was one of the Ministers
of the king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. The king was loyal to the English rulers
and helped them. He betrayed the country. But, Ehelapola Adikaram wanted to
protect the country from the English people. He was dead against the English
rulers. Therefore, the king always suspected Ehelapola Adikaram and wanted to
destroy his family. On 17th
May, 1814, he ordered his military men to kill his family. First,
Maddumabandara’s elder brother, Lokubandara was to be killed. He had great fear
for death and began cry louder. At that time, Maddumabandara bravely came
forward and said, “Aiyandi, don’t be frightened. I will show you how to die”.
He bravely ordered the executioner to cut off his head. Maddumabandara thus
sacrificed his life for the country and became a national hero.
